Red Eyes, Squinting, and Vision Loss: Your Pet’s Eyes Deserve Expert Care

Veterinarian Examining a Dog's Eye

Your pet’s eyes are delicate and essential to their overall well-being. Eye problems can arise quickly and cause permanent damage if not addressed promptly.

At Bulger Veterinary Hospital, our Ophthalmology Service provides expert diagnosis and treatment for a full range of ocular conditions, helping your pet see clearly and live comfortably.

Common Signs of Eye Problems

1. Redness and Inflammation Red eyes commonly signal something in the neighborhood of the eye is a concern. Rapid onset redness and persistent redness are concerns. Concerns range from dry eye disease, corneal scratches, intraocular inflammation, glaucoma, to orbital disease.

2. Squinting or Light Sensitivity Squinting or reluctance to open the eye fully suggests discomfort. Examples of ocular disorders associated with discomfort are eyelid abnormalities, corneal irritation/trauma, intraocular inflammation, and/or glaucoma.

3. Cloudy Eyes Cloudiness may result from cataracts, glaucoma, or corneal disease. Cloudy eyes require prompt examination.

4. Discharge Yellow, green, or thick discharge may indicate conjunctivitis, dry eye disorder or tear duct problems.

5. Vision Loss Bumping into furniture, hesitating in new environments, or startling easily may indicate partial or complete vision loss. Acute vision loss is a priority and necessitates immediate evaluation.

Common Eye Conditions Treated at Bulger

  • Glaucoma: High intraocular pressure causing pain and potential blindness.

  • Cataracts: Clouding of the lens leading to impaired vision.

  • Corneal Ulcers: Surface wounds that can worsen without immediate treatment.

  • Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca): Inadequate tear production causing irritation and infections.

  • Uveitis: Intraocular inflammation that can lead to vision loss and/or glaucoma.

  • Entropion: This is just one example of many eyelid malpositions that can cause ocular irritation or predispose an animal to corneal disease.
